INTRODUCTION

People always communicate. They do so because they need to express themselves or, in a simpler term, they need to tell others their emotions, feelings, thoughts, dreams and experiences. Through ages, people have done these in many possible ways such as drawing, painting, carving, sculpturing, speaking and writing. Yet, the simplest ways by which people can communicate themselves are speaking and writing. These, in turn, create a certain culture for the language because the language is used to express various sides of the community where the people live.
So, every language implies in itself the culture which has created it. So, in a simpler talk, we can say that when we speak or write actually we are involved in the culture of the language we use. That is why, when we learn to speak and write in a certain language, we need as well to learn to do them in accordance with the culture which has created it. So, shortly speaking, every culture creates its own genres.
Genre is a kind of text which has its own communicative purpose, generic structure and language features. Meaning, different genre is used for different purpose. For instance, when people hear about ‘short story’, people will expect to hear something amusing or entertaining, a fiction which has different features and diction with those of scientific journals.
So, based on the generic structure and language features dominantly used, texts are divided into several types. They are narrative, recount, descriptive, report, explanation, analytical exposition, hortatory exposition, procedure, discussion, review, anecdote, spoof, and news item.
This blog is proposed to help the students of Grade 10 of SMA Kristen Petra 2 Surabaya to learn their English. This blog contains of 5 kinds of genre which should be studied in grade 10. They are procedure, descriptive, recount, narrative and news item. Procedure, descriptive and recount will be studied in the first semester, while narrative and news item will be studied in the second semester.
This blog – which is actually an adaptation of the English modules written by English teachers of grade 10 – will focus each genre-based-learning in four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The students are expected to improve their speaking and writing skills at the end of the year.
So students, GET READY!
